A new public square opposite Sydney Town Hall has been given the green light with construction to start in 2028.
Framed by George, Pitt and Park streets, the square is central to our long-term vision of a city centre with plenty of space for people and public life.
Plans for a square outside Sydney Town Hall have been under way for more than 40 years and will be one of the biggest projects ever carried out by the City of Sydney.
“Described as the city’s living room, a central, public square will be the heart of the city,” the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said.
“With ample trees and seats, it will be a place to sit on a weekday lunch break, home to large scale events and gatherings like festivals, markets, celebrations and protests, and a meeting spot as iconic as the Town Hall steps.”
Town Hall Square is one of 3 we envision as part of the city transformation. Linked by the newly pedestrianised George Street, it includes squares at Circular Quay and Central station.
The design for the square will be developed over the next year.
