If you’re younger than 42 years old, the referendum on 14 October will be the first of your lifetime.
A referendum is a national vote on a question to change the Australian constitution.
Where to vote
Just like at a federal election, the Australian Electoral Commission will open dozens of polling places in our local area. Polling places will be open from 8am to 6pm on voting day.
Check aec.gov.au for details on your closest polling place.
How to vote
You must clearly write either ‘yes’ or ‘no’, in full, in English.
The question:
A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?
Don’t worry if you make a mistake. You can ask for another ballot paper and start again.
Do I have to vote?
All Australian citizens aged 18 and over must vote in the referendum.
It is compulsory by law for all eligible Australian citizens to enrol and vote in referendums and federal elections.
