Works on permanent street upgrades to George Street north have begun as we come one step closer to completing the pedestrian boulevard on George Street.
The upgrades are part of our vision to link the 3 future city squares along George Street from Circular Quay to Sydney Town Hall and Central station.
The George Street north project has created 4,878m² of new public space in the heart of our city.
The permanent upgrades include features of the works successfully completed along George Street south.
We’re extending footpaths alongside the light rail between Hunter and Essex streets, entirely removing lanes for motor vehicles.
We’re upgrading the footpath at the intersection of York, Jamison and Lang streets and creating new public plazas at the intersections of Margaret, Bond, Jamison and Dally streets.
We’re widening and making footpaths more accessible with new granite paving, which will allow for more alfresco dining areas.
More trees, bubblers, bike racks and seating will be installed along with new smartpoles with LED streetlights.
The works are expected to be completed by early 2026.
