This striking design by Andrew Burges Architects with Grimshaw Architecture and TCL and build by CPB Contractors has been inspired by Sydney’s ocean beaches.
Integral to the facility’s design will be a public artwork recognising the water narratives of this place.
Located in the rain garden in the centre of the park, the public artwork bangala is by Aunty Julie Freeman (Eora/Yuin) and Jonathan Jones (Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi). Made from the bangalow palm, the bangala is a vessel used for holding fresh water. This artwork speaks of the enduring presence of Eora culture within the landscape and the continuing importance of water on the site.
Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre will be the biggest swimming complex built in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics.
