Some of our favourite snaps from the 2024 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
Featuring vibrant performances and creative designs, the City of Sydney's float shined a spotlight on self-expression and community solidarity.
This year’s theme for the City of Sydney float was You Be You, highlighting how we celebrate individuality and empower everyone to be proud of who they are.
Our choreographed routine was created by Australian dancer Vi Lam to a soundtrack of anthems: Let’s Get Loud by J Lo, George Michael’s Freedom, Ultra Nate’s Free and Express Yourself by Madonna.
The City of Sydney was led by the float displaying comments from employees and community members about what You Be You means to them. There were 8 LED letters spelling out You Be You hovering above the group and 7 Progress Pride flags flown. Employees and friends wore fringe jackets showcasing the colours of the Progress Pride flag.
“For the past decade, I've been involved with the City of Sydney’s Mardi Gras float. Initially as a participant but over the last 5 years, I’ve been the designer behind the creative concept and the manager overseeing its delivery,” Float coordinator Ritchi Bethell said.
“As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, directing our Mardi Gras float has been an immensely fulfilling experience, made even more meaningful by the unwavering support of the City of Sydney.”
The City of Sydney is a major sponsor and supporter of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. This is the 19th year we’ve been involved in the parade.
Thank you to all City of Sydney employees and friends who planned, rehearsed, danced and brought our 2024 float to life. You Be You!
