The busy thoroughfare of Oxford Street is one step closer to better connections as the first stage of our new cycleway, from Liverpool to Brisbane streets, is complete.
A better connection between the city centre and eastern suburbs
Nearly 3,000 riders use Oxford Street each day. It's our most popular street for riding, but it also has the most reported bike crashes of any street in our area.
A new 1km, two-way cycleway will create a safer, more direct connection between the city centre and the east. It will also help make this pocket of Darlinghurst more pleasant for people walking, sitting at cafes and restaurants, and visiting local businesses.
"We love Oxford Street. It’s one of our greatest and most-loved streets and we're committed to building on its reputation as an iconic precinct, buzzing with activity day and night," Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said.
The stars are aligning to see the famous strip reach its full potential, but the significant changes we’ve introduced and redevelopment that’s occuring will take some time. Please be patient and support local businesses whenever you can.
Oxford Street is open for business
It’s business as usual for Oxford Street’s eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, cafes and party scene. Businesses including Don Don Japanese restaurant, Daly Male clothing, The Burdekin and Planetdwellers Travel will benefit from an easier way for commuters to stop-off and pay them a visit.
Along with the new cycleway, the improved streetscape will include new garden beds, street furniture and footpath upgrades.
Staged construction reduces disruption
Construction is carefully staged to limit disruption to businesses and residents. This staged approach means only small parts of Oxford Street are affected at any one time, allowing businesses in other sections to continue operating with minimal impact.
Our Oxford Street west project involves construction between Castlereagh Street and Taylor Square, while the state government’s Oxford Street east project will be built between Taylor Square and Paddington Gates.
The works between Taylor Square and Castlereagh Street are scheduled for completion by the end of the year, weather permitting.
