We're transforming an industrial building into a beautiful new recreation centre for sports-loving locals.
The new centre on Huntley Street is part of our work to meet growing demand for more indoor sporting facilities.
The latest designs for the centre at 6-8 Huntley Street propose 4 indoor multipurpose courts, outdoor practice recreation courts, a fitness space and a new shade-giving canopy facade.
The multipurpose courts will cater for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics and badminton.
Other features include seating for spectators, reception and administration areas, a kiosk and change rooms.
There'll be outdoor courts for practice sessions, a new courtyard and bike parking.
The Huntley Street recreation centre has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind. Solar panels cover the entire rooftop and trees are planted across the courtyard. Rainwater will also be collected, stored and reused on the site.
The centre will be accessible and is only a 15-minute walk from Green Square and St Peters train stations. It’s close to local bus routes and the Bourke Road cycleway.
The City of Sydney acquired the site in 2018 and engaged Collins and Turner Architects to work on the design.
The architects have now lodged a development application for the project. If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2022.
