Work has begun to transform Wimbo Park into a clean, green haven for Surry Hills residents and visitors.
The new public space promises to be a bigger and better improvement, providing more shade from trees and open space for Sydney’s growing communities.
We’ll work in stages to minimise any inconvenience.
What’s new
Firstly, the size. Wimbo Park has tripled in area. After the Olivia Gardens apartment building was demolished to make way for the light rail tracks, the City of Sydney worked closely with the state government to ensure this space was retained for a new and more pleasant park.
When complete, the park will feature:
- more shade from trees and an open lawn
- more parkland and less paving
- more casual seating
- a shared zone along Parkham Lane and a walking path through the park
- a play area with in-ground trampolines and softfall mounds
- a fenced and planted buffer separating the park from the light rail
- a reinstated mural and stonemasons monument.
A greener city
More green spaces improve wellbeing, reduce urban temperatures and bring nature to the city. We aim to have 40% green cover in our area by 2050 with a minimum 27% tree canopy cover.
We plant at least 700 new trees every year and encouraging others in our area to do the same.
A greener Sydney is a more resilient Sydney.
