The bulk of the move is out of the way, bar a few straggling boxes. Now it’s time to work out details like when to take out your bins and the best park to take your pooch.

When to take out the bins
It’s easy to work out your rubbish collection day by searching for your address.
Recycling works differently in each council area, so learn what you can and can’t recycle in the City of Sydney area.
Your move has probably uncovered some furniture and knick-knacks that you no longer need. You might want to sell these items online, donate them to charity or recycle them through our free services, like Recycle It Saturday, the doorstep recycling service and our Ultimo recycling pop-up.
If you’ve got moving boxes lying around, we encourage you to rehome or recycle them too.

We offer a free pick-up service for bulky items you can’t rehome. You can book a bulk pick-up online.
Avoid a parking fine
Fines for incorrect street parking can sting. The good thing is that a parking permit will exempt you from time limits and meter fees in your area. Most residents can get up to 2 permits per household, except if you live in an apartment building that was built after 1996. Find out if you’re eligible and apply for a permit.
Did you know a single car share vehicle can replace up to 12 private cars that would otherwise compete for parking? There are plenty of car sharing options around. This can also work out cheaper.
Plenty of transport options
There are plenty of ways to get around the inner city. Taking public transport is a great way to get to know your new neighbourhood. You’d be surprised at the number of walks, drives and rides you can take.
Bike riders will be interested in our cycling map, which will help you avoid busy roads and make your ride safe and comfortable. You can also request personalised route advice on Facebook messenger. If you’re not feeling confident on 2 wheels, we offer a range of cycling courses. One thing to bear in mind before you jump on your bike: under NSW law, you have to wear a helmet when riding.

Borrow, learn and play at your local library
Our beautiful libraries have over 9 million digital and good-old print books, magazines, makerspace kits, DVDs and other items.
You can borrow retro video game consoles and get free access to stream movies, music and read online magazines and newspapers.
All 9 branches have free wifi, computer and printing services and study desks. Students can hire rooms for free for up to 2 hours a day.
We also have diverse workshops and activities for adults and kids of all ages.
Bring your kids to rhytime and storytime or to a coding workshop.
Membership is free for all NSW residents and you can join the library online.
Plenty of activities at the community centre
If you’re looking to make friends in your new area, head to your local community centre. Each centre has different activities on offer. You can join exercise classes, take creative workshops, play sports, and take your kids to playgroup, music or dance classes. See what’s available at the centre closest to you.
Settle in with your animal companions
We’re big on responsible pet ownership, so we’ve built plenty of off-leash parks to exercise your dog. We’ve also put together resources to help you live with your pet in the city.
Don’t forget to update your dog or cat’s registration details. Or if you’re looking to get a new furry family member, know that in NSW you are legally required to microchip and register your pet. If your pet is desexed, you'll receive a discount on your registration.
Report an issue
From time to time, you’ll come across issues like dumped rubbish, neighbourhood noise, damaged footpaths and others. We’d love you to let us know, so we can address the problem straightaway.
