In the spirit of spreading kindness through lockdown, we asked our Instagram followers which small businesses they’d bought gifts from recently.
Gifts are a great way to keep loved ones smiling through the rollercoaster of lockdown and support small businesses in our area, many of which have turned their stock into creative gift packages.
Whether you have a special occasion coming up or want to gift something ‘just because’, here are 10 recommendations from fellow Sydneysiders on small businesses you can support.
Food and drink
Fabbrica, city centre
Food is the easiest route to most of our hearts, especially restaurant-quality pastas, cheeses, sauces, breads and pantry items from this fine deli. With picnic season in full swing, consider treating your friends to one of Fabbrica’s show-stopping picnic packs. They also sell an impressive selection of alcoholic drinks.
Fabbrica is available for pick up at King Street in the city or delivery in Sydney.
Pepe Saya, Sydney
Butter might not seem like the most conventional gift, but paired with a box of crumpets, ‘googie eggs’ or gnocchi, this is a guaranteed way to make someone smile. Also check out the buttermilk scone packs or buttermilk pancakes for a delightful weekend gift.
Lulu’s Remedy, Sydney
Lulu’s Remedy chilli oil swears to make everything better, especially your breakfast, dinner and oysters. The perfect ‘pick me up’ gift, you can find Lulu’s Remedy at local retailers over Sydney, including Fabbrica mentioned above.
Royal Albert Hotel, Surry Hills
A gift guide wouldn’t be complete without a cocktail suggestion. Bottled margaritas, negronis and espresso martinis are just a few options on offer from this pub. They also have IPA gift boxes, bloody Marys and a new picnic pack which comes with a cooler and cap. Available for pickup.
Sweet treats
Grumpy Donuts, Camperdown
Let them know you’re thinking of them with a box of donuts from this charming spot in Camperdown. Available for pickup or delivery. If you’re ordering as a gift, the staff will add a written note inside the box for you.
The C Word, Sydney
100% plant-based cookies that use minimally processed, mostly organic ingredients. These treats come in some extraordinary flavours, like black sesame and tamari, chai-spiced or matcha and red bean. Available for delivery across the City of Sydney local area.
Wild Flour, Redfern
Wild Flour’s ‘wild high tea’ packages are perfect for making birthdays or anniversaries extra special, even if we can’t celebrate them like normal. They have a selection of cakes including baklava cheesecake, mango coconut or pumpkin pie. You can also order a custom 4-person picnic box, with pretzels, cakes, wraps and drinks.
Home delights
Provider Store, Surry Hills
Inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian design, these beautiful pieces for the home are artful, sustainable and unique. You can find everything from standout pieces of furniture to vases, incense and ceramics. The store’s philosophy is to keep things slow, steady and sustainable – each piece is either handmade in the studio or crafted by a like-minded creative.
The Flower Room, Newtown
With many of us spending a lot more time at home, there’s never been a better time to fill it with flowers. The Flower Room in Newtown offer free delivery during lockdown to many suburbs across Sydney. You can also purchase the ‘market specials’ – a bundle of seasonal flowers designed to replicate the bunch you’d pick up on your way home from work.
Nuia candles, Sydney
Cloud nine, shore thing, and golden hour – if these soy wax candles smell anything like their names suggest, then they’ll be a lovely treat to bring pleasure to a friend. All products are made locally in Sydney.
